MOVIE DETAILS:

"CONTROL"
Late-1970s British post-punk band Joy Division was one of the most influential groups of their time. Sam Riley gives an unforgettable performance as the troubled, enigmatic leader of the Manchester band, Ian Curtis, whose talent for singing intense, darkly infectious pop songs was subverted by mood swings, bouts of epilepsy and a crumbling marriage. Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report) plays his wife, upon whose memoir the film is based. Feature debut of acclaimed photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn.
Official Web Site:
http://www.controlthemovie.com/

"Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten"
Son of a diplomat pines away in a British boarding school, dreams of becoming a rock star and graduates at the top of the class of '77, the rag-tag collection of punk and New Wave bands that challenged the corporate music world. That's just part of the mythical life of singer, guitarist and songwriter Joe Strummer, whose politico-punk rock band the Clash became one of the most influential rock outfits of the modern era. Filmmaker Julien Temple (The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle) has crafted here perhaps the best-filmed account of the British punk scene. Structured as a fireside wake, featuring Jim Jarmusch, Johnny Depp, Pearl Harbour, Bono, John Cusack and more, and including riveting rare film footage of home movies of Strummer and his nascent band and onscreen interviews old and new, Joe Strummer rekindles the fiery musical cauldron that spawned some of the most vital music of the Reagan years.

Fri. Oct 12 @ Sequoia Theatre, Mill Valley, CA @ 6:30 PM
http://mvff.inticketing.com/filmlist.php?&browse_type=etitle&browse_value=Joe%20Strummer:%20The%20Future%20Is%20Unwritten&page=1&action=reset
In celebration of Julien Temple's documentary about The Clash rock legend, Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten, new wave innovator and Bay Area favorite Pearl Harbour has put together a band for a rare performance. A good friend of Strummer's (and former wife of Clash bassist Paul Simonon), Harbour formed Pearl Harbor and the Explosions in 1978 in San Francisco, and the band toured with The Clash, The Talking Heads and Elvis Costello.

Following the performance, dance to guest DJs Skip and Shindog, from San Francisco's First and Foremost Dance Party, New Wave City. They'll spin classic Clash, Strummer and, in honor of Anton Corbijn's new film Control, Joy Division and New Order.

Be there as Pearl Harbour puts the Rock! in Throckmorton!
Don’t wait. This event will sell out.

I like the fact that they stayed fairly true to the original, including all the vocals and using some of the drum sounds, synth lines and bass lines (unlike the extremely crappy Armand Van Helden remix from "The Rest of new Order").

I still need to listen to this mix a few more times to decide if I think it's an improvement or not.

I feel so extraordinary
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come

I was a bit of a late bloomer and was not really a follower of Joy Division, but this two dvd documentary did a fantastic job of showing how funny the group is (it's awesome to hear them speak) and lots of videos including the first time Blue Monday was performed on stage. I highky recommend it

-----------------------------------------------------------------

NEW ORDER PLEDGES NORTH AMERICAN SHOWS
Yesterday - 6:56:22 PM

(Billboard) New Order bassist Peter Hook says the pioneering rock act plans to play "as many shows as we can" in North America this year, in lieu of the limited appearances the band made here in support of its 2001 album, "Get Ready." As previously reported, New Order will on April 12 release its latest Warner Bros. set, "Waiting for the Sirens' Call."

"We felt very guilty for not coming to America last time," Hook tells Billboard.com. "We only did Moby's [Area: One tour], which was before the album came out. That left us feeling quite annoyed with ourselves, because we realized how important our support in America has been to us. We wanted to make sure this time that the first thing we do is come over here. We're doing Coachella and then we'll do some dates in Chicago and New York."

Hook says the band has already begun rehearsing material from the new album, as well as a host of extra tracks that did not make the final cut. He also reveals that New Order may revive a host of back catalog gems for the first time in ages, but that the time constraints of a typical festival set are making decisions tough.

"We've all been listening to the older stuff and realizing that we'd love to play songs like 'This Time of Night,' 'Leave Me Alone,' 'The Village,' 'Thieves Like Us' and 'Perfect Kiss,'" he says. "But god knows how we're going to do that. I honestly can't figure it out, because with festivals, you only get to play for an hour usually."

Although not all of the dates are confirmed, New Order is expected to appear at such summer U.K. festivals as Glastonbury, Oxegen and T in the Park.

Jan 14, 2005 - 10:58:23 AM

(New Musical Express) New Order returns with their eighth studio album in the spring, and join the class of 2005 by taking their inspiration from... classic New Order.

Recorded over the past year, "Waiting For The Sirens Call" is divided between guitar tracks in the vein of previous album "Get Ready" and the synth-based tracks that are their trademark. NME can confirm it's their best album since "Technique". A single, likely to be "Jetstream", will be released in advance and, as normal, sleeve art will be designed by Peter Saville.

Bernard Sumner told NME: "The last album was guitar-heavy simply because we felt that we'd left that instrument alone for a long time and we thought that was what the general trend was and what people wanted to hear. But when we started doing live gigs, we found that people got off on the more dance-oriented and synth stuff just as much. This album really splits into two halves. It's a mixture of two, because that's what New Order fans like."

The album also marks the consolidation of New Order as a unit after the cautious nature of "Get Ready" - which had been their first album after a bitter eight-year hiatus.

Said Sumner: "Let's not beat about the bush, we did fall out with each others. We didn't actually split up, but we did fall out. But I'd challenge anyone to go through what we went through and not fall out with each other. You're compressed together like sardines for years on end, and eventually somebody's bound to react."

The band also took the chance to blow one particular myth out of the water. "They claimed that we had to change some of our songs because The Killers." said drummer Stephen Morris, "Which is a rumour started by The Killers!"

New Order's highly anticipated new album is well on the way to completion, with the band explaining that they've got twelve songs ready, and that it sounds closer in style to their 1989 classic 'Technique' than their more recent output.

The band are currently recording the as-yet-untitled new record (their first studio album since the disappointingly received 2001 'Get Ready') at Peter Gabriel's Real World studios in Bath.

"We've got 12 songs with vocals and we've recorded eight of them," New Order frontman Bernard Sumner explained to 6 Music, "But because we've got Phil [Cunningham - keyboardist and guitarist who previously played with Sumner in Electronic] helping us on guitar now, the writing's going a lot quicker.

"So we've actually got 20 or 21 backing tracks written but of course I've got to catch up on the vocals and it's a lot harder work writing the vocals than writing the music, I can tell you."

The album is being produced dually by John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead) and Steven Street (Blur, The Smiths). Bassist Peter Hook has explained that the new record will have a more positive feel than it's predecessor.

"It's sounding great," he explained, "It's more 'Techniquey' in its feel than 'Get Ready' is, and we're all feeling uppy and it sounds uppy."

Legendary radio DJ John Peel dies
Yesterday - 6:35:51 AM

(BBC) Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru.

Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the city of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack.

He was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and in recent years had also presented Home Truths on Radio 4.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said Peel's contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable".

'Hugely missed'

He added: "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1.

It was because of him I got to hear some of the most obscure but influential music I ever heard

James Dean Bradfield
"John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades.

"Hopeful bands all over the world sent their demo tapes to John knowing that he really cared.

"His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years. In fact, when I last saw him he was engaged in a lively debate with his fellow DJs over the state of new music today

"He will be hugely missed."

Mr Parfitt told Radio 1 Newsbeat Peel had been on a holiday of a lifetime when he died.

He added: "He had gone on holiday with Sheila to a place where he had always wanted to go."

Mainstream music

Peel was born in Heswall, near Liverpool, and after completing his military service in Britain in 1962, went to the US where he began working for a radio station in Dallas.

He joined Radio 1 at the launch in 1967, and established himself with the late night programme Top Gear.

He became one of the first DJs to give exposure to punk, reggae, hip-hop, before they crossed over into the mainstream.

James Dean Bradfield, lead singer of the Manic Street Preachers, paid tribute to Peel.

He told BBC News Online: "It was because of him I got to hear some of the most obscure but influential music I ever heard.

"He was a lifeline to hearing music I would never have hear otherwise. The service he provided was getting to hear music that you couldn't buy in Cardiff. He was a portal to a whole new world.

After announcing Peel's death on Radio 1, the station played his favourite song, Teenage Kicks, by The Undertones.

Bernard Sumner said it was a "dreadful shock".

"If it wasn't for John Peel, there would be no Joy Division and no New Order.

"He was one of the few people to give bands that played alternative music a chance to get heard, and he continued to be a champion of cutting-edge music throughout his life.

"He will be genuinely missed by millions of music fans all over the world, both inside and outside the music industry. Our thoughts are with his family."

Peter Hook from New Order has also been in touch and told us that without John he doesn't think they would have made it:

"It was funny because he actually helped our career from nothing."

"We didn't meet him for a long, long time and one of our warmest memories is that he was just as nervous as we were about meeting him and as soon as you got together it was like meeting old friends."

"I mean the guy really was somebody who looked after you - he had a love of music and helped people who made music."

"He was the only support we had in the beginning - they were very cold and lonely days, and I've got an awful feeling that there'll be a lot of very lonely, cold, days without him ."

"It's a really sad moment - for music, for radio, for groups in general. I'd hate to be in a new group starting out without John Peel."

NEW ORDER have been talking about the recording of their forthcoming album and have revealed that is going to be a dance record more in the vein of 1989's 'Technique' than their last studio album 'Get Ready' made in 2001. The band have over twenty songs recorded although so far only eight of them have had the vocals added. Meanwhile frontman BERNARD SUMNER appeared onstage with The Doves last week to perform an acoustic version of 'Bizarre Love Triangle' at a tribute to former New Order manager Rob Gretton who passed away five years ago
